How to look after your leather furniture

At Cleaning Pro we have restored many items of leather furniture over the years, and if we do say so ourselves, we’re rather good at it! In this blog we wanted to outline some of the ways you can keep your leather furniture looking and feeling like it did when you first bought it.

Leather should last for a long time, but it does require some care and attention every now and again- particularly because it’s more porous than it might look or feel. It’s always best to put the work in early when it comes to maintenance so you don’t have to shell out for expensive replacements further down the line!

How to deal with spillages is one of the most important things to consider with any type of furniture, because they’re definitely going to happen at some point. Never use bleach or ammonia on leather- that’ll just cause an even more pronounced stain. Instead, spills should be immediately blotted (not rubbed!) with a soft absorbent cloth whenever they occur, then gently cleaned, conditioned and protected with leather care products.

Like other types of furniture, leather furniture will fade when exposed to sunlight, so that needs to be taken into account when you’re deciding where to put it. Placing leather items near heat sources like radiators can also dry it out and lead to cracking.

Apart from regular vacuuming, nothing particularly drastic is required to help protect the investment you’ve made in your leather furniture. In our experience it’s best to avoid some of the advice you might find on the internet related to cleaning leather- stuff like using toothpaste or alcohol. If you get your leather furniture professionally cleaned at least once a year it should stay in great shape.
